Abstract
Generalized immune activation occurs early in the course of many infectious diseases.
Clinical investigations have shown that immune activation can be quantified by
measurement of soluble activation products in serum. Tumor necrosis factor(TNF),
interleukin-6(IL-6) are the major activation products.
This study was carried out to determine the relation between the serum level of TNF
and IL-6 and the clinical picture in leprosy. The study population consisted of 31
patients with tuberculoid leprosy and 71 patients with lepromatous leprosy(32 cases of
M. leprae negative patients and 39 cases of M. leprae positive Patients). Serum samples
and clinical and laboratory data were collected form each patient and control. The levels
of serum TNF and IL-6 were measured by a sandwich enzyme immunoassay.
The detection percentage of serum TNF and IL-6 were significantly raised as goes to
the lepromatous pole than normal controts while TNF and IL-6 titers did not corelated
with the bacillary load among lepromatous patients, as measured by bacterial index
These data suggest than non-specific activation of macrophages and neutrophiles
occurs in leprosy and high titers of TNF and IL-6 alone, in the absence of a
functioning T cell response, do not appear to confer resistance against Mycobacterium
leprae.
